Caterpillar - The Environment
Strong foundations are the beginning of all education. In Caterpillar Class, we recognise that the early years of a child's school journey are crucial in shaping their confidence, curiosity and love of learning.
The environment in Caterpillar Class is carefully designed to support curiosity, independence and meaningful play. Our aim is to create a space where children feel safe, confident and inspired to explore the world around them.
Caterpillar Class is one large, open space within the main school building. Within this space we have worked carefully to create a range of smaller areas where children can focus, explore and deepen their thinking through play. By creating defined spaces within the classroom, children can move freely between different types of play while still having opportunities to settle into activities for longer periods of time.
Inside the classroom, children have access to a wide range of continuous provision areas that allow them to follow their interests and develop their ideas through play. These include areas for:
Construction
Small world play
Creative exploration
Role play
Investigative skills
Loose parts
Resources are open ended and accessible so that children can make choices independently and return to their ideas again and again.
We also provide quiet spaces within the environment where children can pause, reflect and enjoy calmer moments in the day. These spaces are often used for sharing books, telling stories, looking at pictures or simply taking time away from the busier areas of the classroom. Developing a love of stories and language is an important part of life in Caterpillar Class, and children have many opportunities throughout the day to read, listen and tell their own stories.
Language is at the heart of our environment. Through stories, conversations, singing and shared experiences, children are surrounded by rich opportunities to develop their communication and understanding. Adults play alongside children, modelling language, asking thoughtful questions and supporting children as they express their ideas.
Emergent Writing
As children move through nursery, their mark making and early writing exploration becomes increasingly purposeful. What may begin as exploration and experimentation gradually develops into more intentional marks, with children beginning to communicate their ideas, stories and thinking through the marks they make. As their control and confidence grows, their mark making becomes more deliberate and meaningful.
In Caterpillar Class, children have access to a wide range of mark making materials across the environment. From pencils, crayons and paint to chalk, clipboards and large-scale drawing opportunities, children are encouraged to explore marks in many different ways. Alongside this, we recognise the important role of physical development in supporting early writing. Opportunities for climbing, balancing, digging, building and manipulating materials all help to develop the strength and control children need for emerging mark making.
Messy Play
Our creative and malleable areas allow children to experiment with different materials, textures and tools, encouraging imagination and self expression. In the construction and small world areas, children develop problem solving skills, storytelling and collaboration with their peers.
Children in Caterpillar Class also have regular opportunities for messy and sensory play. Throughout the day they have access to experiences such as sand, water, mud, paint and a variety of natural materials. These activities are an important part of early childhood learning, supporting creativity, exploration, language development and physical development. Because of this, children often become wonderfully messy as they investigate and play, so we always recommend that children come to nursery with a change of clothes.
Outdoor learning is also an essential part of our environment. Our outdoor space allows children to move freely, explore nature, develop physical skills and continue their play in different ways. We believe that learning should not be limited to the classroom and that outdoor experiences play an important role in supporting children’s development.
In Caterpillar Class, our environment is always evolving. Practitioners carefully observe children’s interests and adapt the provision so that it remains engaging, meaningful and responsive to the children in our care.
