The Aviary

Welcome to The Aviary

The Aviary is a specialist provision designed to support pupils with additional learning and communication needs. Our aim is to create a safe, structured and nurturing environment where every pupil can develop academically, socially and emotionally.

We recognise that every child is unique. Our approach is centred on understanding each pupil’s strengths, needs and interests so that learning can be tailored to help them achieve their full potential. Through personalised support, clear routines and a supportive learning environment, we help pupils build confidence, independence and essential life skills.

The Aviary follows an adapted and inclusive curriculum designed to meet the needs of pupils with additional learning needs while maintaining high expectations for progress and achievement.

Our curriculum focuses on both academic learning and the development of key life skills. Areas of learning include:

Teaching is delivered through engaging, practical and multi-sensory approaches to ensure pupils can access learning in meaningful ways.

Targets and Progress

All pupils in The Aviary work towards personalised learning targets. These targets are informed by:

  • Baseline assessments
  • Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes
  • Teacher observations and assessments
  • Recommendations from external professionals

Progress is monitored regularly and targets are reviewed to ensure pupils continue to be appropriately supported and challenged.

EHCP Support

Many pupils attending The Aviary have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

EHCP outcomes are embedded within daily teaching and learning. Staff ensure that:

  • EHCP targets are incorporated into classroom activities
  • Support strategies recommended by professionals are implemented consistently
  • Progress towards EHCP outcomes is carefully monitored

We work closely with families, therapists and external agencies to review progress and ensure pupils receive the support outlined in their plans.

Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)

Communication development is a key focus within The Aviary. We work closely with Speech and Language Therapists to support pupils in developing effective communication skills.

Support may include:

  • Individual and group communication targets
  • Use of visual communication systems
  • Language development activities
  • Social communication programmes
  • Communication aids where appropriate

Staff are trained to implement strategies recommended by therapists to ensure communication support is embedded throughout the school day.
